What is Resilience?

7,00,000

What is 7,00,000? These are statistics from World Health Organization, which says that 7,00,000 on average, die from suicide every year. If you equate this number, one person lost their battle with mental illnesses in the past 40 seconds.

Mental Illnesses and mental health are on of the many topics in India that are greeted with disapproval and frowns. The stigma around it in India is great but the statistics of people suffering from Mental illnesses like depression, are even greater, quoting WHO,

“Depression is a common illness worldwide, with an estimated 3.8% of the population affected, Approximately 280 million people in the world have depression….. At its worst, depression can lead to suicide. Over 700 000 people die due to suicide every year. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in 15-29-year-olds... more than 75% of people in low- and middle-income countries receive no treatment”

And these numbers are across the world, And these numbers are across the world, what about a country with a HUGE taboo around mental illnesses? At the end of the day, a majority of people don’t have the awareness or the resources to fight mental illness. They say our youth is the foundation pillars of our society, why not start there? Destigmatize, spread awareness and help our youth fight mental illnesses.

NOW is the time we start working towards destigmatizing this taboo. Right now, our students are in a state of transition- from being homebound for 2 years to now going out in the world; to being adolescent to becoming an adult: to preparing for colleges, entrance exams, competitive exams, boards; literally living through historic events and amidst all of the overcrowded schedule, figuring out your own identity. This is where Resilience comes in.
